Canadian Goose Photos and Information
The Canadian Goose, or Branta canadensis is a large goose with a black head and neck, white stripe on the side of the head, and brown feathers. The tip of the tail and feet are black. It lives in just about the entire North American continent and in some areas is even considered a menace. It's amazing to think that back in the 60s, Canadian Geese were considered endangered. ![]() Canadian Geese are known to hang out in meadowy areas - including the sides of highways, golf courses, playing fields, parks, and more. They can be aggressive when approached and cause trouble when they decide to hang out somewhere that people need to go. Most towns in the US now have Canadian Geese during some or all of their migration path. There are from 5 to 11 subspecies of Canadian Goose, depending on who is putting them into categories. They can weigh up to 24 pounds and have a wingspan of almost 6 feet. Candian Geese have a strong sense of family. A pair of parents mate for life, raising anywhere from 4 to 7 eggs a year. The eggs incubate for around 30 days before hatching. The parents both defend the nest and tend to the little chicks. Sometimes several parents will join together, taking joint care of the chicks. The parents will stay with their young all year, migrating with them and taking care of them. If you watch a large flock of Canadian Geese fly overhead, you can often see the family groups separate out as they come in to land. Canadian Geese can live to age 30 or more. Canadian Geese are very people-friendly and will eat anything from bread to insects to corn to fish. Hunters are also very fond of Canadian Geese, because they are very tasty, and because many communities actively want to get rid of the birds. ![]() ![]() Buy Poster at Art.com Canadian Gooses Main Index of Photos and Articles
