Emu Photos and Information

The emu is a large, flightless bird that lives in Australia. It is related to the ostrich, and stands 5' high.

Emus are famous for their powerful kicks and for their fast running speed. Emus can even swim. The males incubate the eggs, watching over them for two full months.

Known as Dromaius novaehollandiae, this large bird is so common around Australia that many farmers consider it a pest. It tends to eat crops along with the insects it finds there. In fact in 1932 there was an "emu war" where farmers tried to completely destroy emus using weapons as dire as machine guns.

Nowadays, the emu is used as a food source and is also popular in zoos.

That emu was seen in a wild animal park in Galveston, Texas.
