Nene - the Hawaiian Goose

The Hawaiian Goose, or Nene (pronounced "nay nay"), is the state bird of Hawaii. The Nene was designated the state bird in 1957. While it was once a game bird, it is now an endangered species. There are only around 800 wild Nene.

The Nene is very similar to the overabundant Canadian Goose of the US mainland. It has a light brown area on the side of the neck, and its breast is also light brown.

The above Nene were seen at the Bermuda Zoo in 2005.
