Birding Glossary - MoltingMolting is a natural process where a bird gets rid of old feathers and gains new feathers. They molt most frequently when they are young, since as they grow the feathers must naturally become larger and change from the often fluffy keep-warm style to the longer, flight-style. Many birds also molt before and after breeding season, so they can have bright, attractive feathers while finding a mate.
