Birding Glossary - SleepBirds vary differently in the ways that they sleep. Some sleep on a branch, head nestled under their feathers. Others just squat on the ground, head forward. Some curl up in a warm nest, while woodpeckers cling to a tree.Birds do not necessarily only sleep in their "off hours" (night for most birds, day for owls and other nocturnal creatures). Many birds also take naps during the day - brief periods of rest in the afternoon after eating. It's been thought that when birds rest on a perch that their feet 'lock onto' the branch, but other studies show that some birds do not have rigid feet, and are simply balancing well. While some birds sleep in large groups (in a roost), others sleep in smaller groups or by themselves. When weather gets bad, many birds that would normally sleep alone will be found huddling with others for warmth.
