Chives
Growing Information and Photos
Chives, or Allium schoenoprasum, is a relative of the onion and leek. It is thought to have originated in England and Wales. It quickly spread to be found in most of Europe and was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
The grass-like leaves of the herb are used in dips and on potatoes and egg dishes. The plant is easy to grow in most temperate climates and is stubbornly perennial in many. The leaves grow to around 10" long. In July the plant will blossom with pale-purple flowers.
These chives are in Massachusetts and come back every year in big, bushy clumps.
