Creating a Family History Webpage
Just about every family seems to have a webpage today. Here's some help on getting your own family history and information on line.
Choose a Webpage Provider
Do you go on line through aol.com, charter.net, earthlink.net or another large provider? Chances are that you already have free webspace available for your use. Just about every ISP now provides 5-10mb worth of free webspace, including easy to use tools and features. If you don't have free space from your ISP, check out our list of website resources for suggestions on where to host with.
Start with the Basics
It can be intimidating to look at a blank web page and think about creating all the pages. Start small. Create your intro page that talks about your family and what it's all about. List your main 'roadblocks' that you'd like help with.
Put Up Diaries and Letters
Part of what is fascinating about sharing inforamtion is reading first hand accounts of times past. If you have old letters and diaries, where the information is no longer 'private', put it on line! You can help thousands of others really feel what it was like to live in earlier days.
Keep an Eye on Privacy
Take the same precautions with this website that you would with any other. Don't list your email address anywhere. Spammers actively search the web for email addresses to add into their databases. If you want to add a mailto link, do so in such a way that your email address is not visible. Check out our HTML Site for more assistance with this.
Don't put up the most recent generation or two. Often questions like your "mother's maiden name" are security safeguards at banks or brokerages. If someone can just find this on your website, it makes your world a bit less secure.
