Summertime Genealogy Reading Ideas
Summertime often brings with it the time for leisure reading. You can read in the long sunny hours after work, or as the kids play by the pool. Here are some genealogy ideas.
* Famous Ancestors
If you trace back far enough, just about all of us are descended from SOMEONE well known - a colonist, a poet, a clergyman, whatever they were. Gather up whatever books and notes you have on that person, and read about them. Your anecdotes can entertain your family all fall long.
* Historic Groups
Many of us have lost touch of our "group" in modern times. In the days of the past, the group you belonged to often defined *everything* about you. Get some books on the traditions and society of the grops you hail from, and learn what life in that group was like.
* Regional Histories
You might know that your family was kicked out of France during the religious wars - but what was it really like to live during those times? Get a book that talks about the lives and times of that period in history. When you think your own life is stressful, sometimes it helps to realize what our ancestors struggled through.
* Diaries
Many of our ancestors left behind diaries of their times. While sometimes they are full of day after day of mild weather descriptions, every once in a while a gem will leap out and astound you. Take the time to walk the days with your ancestor.
* How-To Genealogy Books
Most of us that do genealogy know how to do genealogy. We write the town halls, search the census records, and dig at loose ends. Still, sometimes there is that one thing you have NOT tried that makes all the difference. It's well worth it to go through a few how-to books just to make sure you know all the tricks.
