CivilWarLetters.com carries letters from a 21 year old farm boy to a friend, who he eventually marries when his sweetheart leaves him for another.
Newton Scott was a private with the Iowa volunteers, and left his darling Hattie behind to fight for the cause of the north. He wrote a friend of his in town, Hannah, and described the conditions he encountered at his various posts.
Before his tour of duty ended, Hattie had left him for another. Hannah remained true to him, however, and when he returned home, they married and had nine children.
