Female Genealogy DNA Testing - mtDNAFemale genealogy testing works with two women that are supposedly related through their mothers. No males can be involved in the two lines - only females. Note that you CAN test the son of a woman at the end of a line, because he did get the mitochondria from her. However, that son does not pass the mitochondria along, being male. So he is the 'end of the line'. This testing works by working with the mitochondria, which is passed down from mother to daughter. Family Tree DNA The best kit provided by Family Tree DNA is the "Plus" but they don't say just how it is better than the basic test. Each test is $299, so you would need to buy one for each person. The total is $598. There is a less precise test available too, but if you're going to test, would you want a cheaper test and not be sure if the results are meaningful? Family Tree DNA Website GeneTree With GeneTree, the mtDNA test focusses on the HVR1 and HVR2 regions. They say they sequence over 740 base pairs. It's hard to know how this compares to the Family Tree DNA list, although with the similar male tests the Family Tree test was 50% more complete. I'll write to get more details here. Total cost here is $490. GeneTree Website RelativeGenetics.com The RelativeGenetics site says nothing about how they do their mtDNA testing. They only say it's a total of $490 for two people, and takes 20 business days. Also in order for two females to be compared, they want another $200 for you to become part of their "Project". RelativeGenetics Website OxfordAncestors.com Oxford Ancestors is more interested in linking your DNA to known English clans than with other humans. Their female test is 180 English pounds.
