Male Genealogy DNA Testing - Y-DNAThere are several companies that now provide male-line DNA testing for genealogy purposes. In many cases this can be the only way to prove or disprove a pet theory! With male line testing, you must compare two men who are supposedly related through a father-son line. No maternal links can be involved. This test involves genes found only on the Y chromosome - a chromosome that women do not have. This is called Y-DNA Testing. Family Tree DNA The best kit provided by Family Tree DNA has 37 markers, or "spots" to compare. Each test is $289, so you would need to buy one for each man. The total is $578. There is a less precise test available too, but if you're going to test, would you want a cheaper test and not be sure if the results are meaningful? Family Tree DNA Website GeneTree With GeneTree, 26 different markers are used. The test here is $225 per person, or $450 total. Yes, it's less than Family Tree DNA, but it's also only using 2/3rds of the markers. So the chance of an error either way is higher. GeneTree Website DNA Heritage DNA Heritage uses a 43 marker Y-Chromosome test, so they have the most that I've found. They're running a special for only $199 for the test. DNA Heritage Website Relative Genetics Relative Genetics has a 37 marker test, at $195 per person. So while this is fewer than DNA Heritage, it's also quite a good price. Relative Genetics Website OxfordAncestors.com Oxford Ancestors is more interested in linking your DNA to known English clans than with other humans. Their male test uses 10 marker points and is 180 English pounds. Oxford Ancestors Website Information on DNA Testing in Genealogy
