Putting Cemetery Information on the Web

OK, you've documented your cemetery, and are ready to share your information with your fellow genealogists. Here's how you put it on the web so it's easy to use.

First, proofread everything 2 or 3 times. One of the worst things that could happen is that someone wastes years of research assuming what you put up was correct - when really you had a typo in a year or last name. Make this as accurate as you possibly can.

Next, find a location to store your web site. Most ISPs now provide free web space to their members. There are also many free web sites on the web, such as GeoCities. Get familiar with how to use your web provider.

When you load your page worth of information, it's best to have one large page for the cemetery. That way someone can load the page and then use their browser's "find" option to find the name they are looking for. The more pages you break your listing down into, the harder it is for someone to use it.

If you want to load up photos, be sure to keep those on separate pages. Many users have very slow connections and it might take them minutes to wait for the photos to load. Let them get quickly to the basic information, but provide other goodies such as photos on separate pages.

Be sure to include, if you have it, a diagram of where all of the graves were. This might be something to scan in and make available as a separate image. While the names are of course great, it can be just as important for the researcher to see what other graves were nearby.

Be sure to provide a contact link - either for you, or for the local town hall. Give those who want to get even more information a place to go to!
