Genealogy, Health and Breast CancerMost of the time genealogy is a fun passion - learning about the lives and loves of your ancestors. But genealogy can also be critical in health issues, such as breast cancer. Up to 10% of all breast cancer cases are linked to genetic issues. A woman with a mother or sister with breast cancer is twice as likely to get breast cancer herself when compared with a woman who does not have direct relatives with breast cancer. The risk seems to involve BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations which run in the family. Other important risk factors include obesity and age. Heavy women are many times as likely to get breast cancer compared with healthy-weight women. Also, women who are older (over 50) are much more likely to develop breast cancer. When you are working on your genealogy trees, be sure to pay attention to medical issues, especially ones like breast cancer which can be passed down to subsequent generations. The research you are doing may help you monitor yourself and your own family for issues - and catch them when they are still easily treatable. Genealogy Health Medical Form
