Genealogy Causes Information OverloadBe cautious! Genealogy can cause a syndrome named the Information Overload Disorder, or IOD. Sufferers find themselves losing hours of valuable TV watching time. Take the case of Mabel Smith. Before getting into genealogy, she was quite happy watching her soap operas for 3 hours a day, then grabbing a frozen dinner before enjoying a full evening of drama TV. She used to boast that she watched at least one episode of Law & Order every day for 2 years straight. Not any more. Once Mabel came down with IOD, she began to neglect her couch in favor of talking with her relatives. Her judgement became so clouded that she actually found their tales of earlier days interesting! She began to document these rambling dialogues so that others in her family could also become infected. She became a carrier of IOD. As is typical, Mabel doesn't even realize she's sick. "I really find this fascinating," she claims after spending 2 hours talking with her elderly aunt about depression-era living. When asked what the latest goings-on in the soap opera world were, she couldn't even describe the lost pregnancy or the latest kidnapping attempt. Another case is John Moore. John used to be content with his life - bowling on Fridays, darts on Tuesdays. But once John got into genealogy, he began to learn about his roots, and the traditions of his cultural heritage. He learned he was 25% Native American, and suddenly he was spending his weekends going to festivals. He learned his ancestor was in the Civil War, and how he listens to period music on his way to work. If you or a person you know appears to be coming down with IOD, take immediate action! Cut that person off from all relatives. To be safe, keep them away from anybody over the age of 40. Restrict internet viewing to game sites. Only watch reality TV shows. If you haven't guessed it yet ... APRIL FOOLS!!
