Recording your Thanksgiving Day Family TraditionsOne of the biggest family holidays of each year is Thanksgiving. It's a day when generations gather together to share old recipes and tell old stories. It's a genealogist's dream! The easiest way to remember the stories that are shared and recipes that are talked about is to just run a tape recorder in the background. Don't make a big deal about it, and don't use it to share gossip! This can be a GREAT tool for remembering the history of that blue pitcher, though, rather than trying to scribble down the story while you are eating. Be sure to get some pictures of everybody - including the table! Ask about the various dishes that are served - was a recipe a favorite of a great-grandfather or great-grandmother? Are any of the serving bowls or items family heirlooms? Were any recipes done a certain way for a certain reason? There's the old story of a woman who always made a roast about cutting it in half. She did that because her mom did it that way. Finally the woman asked her mom why they cut the roast in half, and her mom didn't know. They both went to the grandmother and asked. It turns out the grandmother only had a small oven - and had to cut the roast in half to fit in her tiny oven! Traditions form for MANY strange reasons - find out the roots of yours!
