Genealogy Research on a WeddingOne of the most fascinating topics to research is the weddings of your ancestors. For many, this was the biggest event of their lives. It was their passage into adulthood, their dedication to begin and raise a family, and the largest and most expensive party / family gathering they would hold. While there are often pictures from the weddings of your parents, grandparents and other relatives, there are rarely other details about those celebrations. Take a few minutes to sit down with your relatives and talk with them about what went on! If you or one of your relatives has a wedding coming up, you might even incorporate some of the same customs into your own happy event. Here are some sample questions you can ask about the wedding. Be sure to add in your own! The Proposal How was the wedding agreed on? Did the man ask the woman, or visa versa? Were the parents consulted before or after? Do they remember the words used to propose? The Planning How much time elapsed between the proposal and the wedding? Were a lot of locations scouted, or was a certain one set in mind? What dress styles did the bride like? What sorts of invitations were sent? Was there a shower held for the bride? What were traditions of the time about the "night before" and what the bride and groom would do to prepare? The Ceremony Was it held in a church or elsewhere? How did the bride and groom get to the church, and then get to the spot with the person who did the ceremony? Were they escorted? Did they walk together or alone? Were there bridesmaids and best men, and what did they wear? What was the ceremony like? Were any special things done during the ceremony? Was there any music? How did the two leave the area, was anything special done during this part? The Reception How did the bride and groom get to the reception? Where was it held? Were any special things done when the bride and groom entered? Did they sit with others or apart? What were the decorations like? What was the band/DJ like? What music was played? What sort of dancing was done? What was the food like? The Honeymoon Were there any special things done when the reception was over? Did the couple go right to a honeymoon? If they went on a honeymoon, how was the location chosen?
