Genealogy Travel in Germany, Belgium or HollandIf you're heading to northern Europe to do genealogy research, here are some notes to help you get started! GenWeb If you visit Central Europe GenWeb you'll find the GenWeb pages for Belgium, Holland, Germany and other nearby countries. This is the best place to get started, to do as much research as possible before you actually head to Europe. Air Travel You'll probably need to fly to get to this area of Europe. I would advise setting up a fare watcher on Travelocity.com that watches all airfares and sends you an alert when the prices drop. You can then buy the tickets however you want, but with the way prices go up and down by hundreds of dollars a day, getting that instant alert might be the difference between being able to afford a trip and never going. Books of the Area I highly recommend the Fodor series of travel books. They have information on the history, museums, restaurants, hotels, and much more for each location. The more you know and understand the local culture and customs before you leave, the more informative your actual visit there will be! Fodor's Germany Fodor's Holland Fodor's Belgium and Luxembourg Plan Local Transportation There is a great train system throughout Europe, where you can get a single ticket for multiple days. I found the prices rather high, though, and it was much cheaper to just rent a car and be able to stay and leave as you wanted to. Look through the options and determine what combination works best for your comfort levels in driving in a strange location. If you spend 8 hours getting lost and unlost, the extra expense of the train might be quite worth it. Find Bargain Hotels Near the Action Whatever it is you're interested in, find hotels that are nearby. That way you can take as much or little time as you want in those areas and be able to pop back to the hotel whenever you want. Whether your interest is churches, museums, restaurants or nightlife, plan your hotel accordingly.
