Genealogy in Ireland - the Counties

When Ireland experienced the Great Potato Family, literally millions of Irish people fled the island for other shores. In current times, this means that the millions of descendants of those Irish are now trying to do genealogy in Ireland from distant locations. One of the first things to understand when doing Irish genealogy is that Ireland is made up of four provinces, and each province is then divided up into counties. The county level records are the first place to start in your genealogy search.

Determine which county your ancestors were located in, and contact the appropriate heritage center. That will get you going on your research!
