Griffith's Valuation - Genealogy in IrelandGriffith's Valuation is one of the most important genealogy records existing in Ireland. This was done in the 1850s, of all property owned in the country. The final report was published in 1855. The valuation was done because of the implementation of the Poor Law System - in particular, the Tenement Act of 1842. This tax was paid for by all land owners, and the government wanted to make sure that every person was properly accounted for. Each town was indexed, with the person's first name, last name, town listed. In addition, the valuation often listed the map location of the property, any structures on that land (house, barn etc), and a monetary value of that location. While the Griffith's Valuation wasn't meant to be a census, as it turned out the official 1851 census was destroyed in later years. This means the Griffith's Valuation is extremely valuable to genealogists. Most libraries and genealogy record offices have copies of the Griffith's Valuation, either on microfilm or CD.
