Coats of Arms for the Holidays
A coat of arms provides a way to feel in touch with the family of your past. Here are some suggestions for getting a quality coat of arms for your home.
Keep in mind that for serious heraldry students, a coat of arms was usually awarded to an INDIVIDUAL PERSON. So it's not that "all Sheas everywhere" had a given coat of arms. It's that one particular Shea was somehow honorable, and was given this coat of arms in thanks. Yes, he might have passed it down to a given son, but normally it wasn't that every single Shea, everywhere in the world, somehow miraculously now got to use that coat of arms.
Still, in modern day society, we don't tend to worry much about rank and status. A person is of value because of what they do, not because of their being 'higher' or 'lower' than others in their village. So for most of us, a coat of arms is a fun way to connect to our past and to learn more about those who came before us.
