Genealogy on eBay

I am a huge fan of eBay in general. I have gotten oriental dolls, beautiful dresses, and many other things on eBay. But one of the best uses for a genealogist is to acquire objects that connect you to your own past.

I have a friend of mine who happened to find his grandfather's diary on eBay! Someone had picked it up at a yard sale and decided to sell it on the online auction house. My friend bid for it and won it, and now has a valuable link to his own past. Most people don't find something quite that directly related, but there is still quite a lot to look through.

I personally enjoy wine quite a bit, and am researching my family in the 1600s and 1700s. I was thrilled to find two wine glasses on eBay dating from that period. I can now drink a fine wine from these glasses and ponder what my ancestors might have been thinking, drinking from these same sorts of glasses, enjoying their day to day lives.

If you're looking into the civil war, it's always great to find memorabilia from the civil war, from buttons and uniforms to letters and diaries. If you do get letters or diaries, I'm very much in favor of putting that information on line. The value that others can get from those stories is immesureable.

Head on line, and start exploring!
