GEDCOM Creation and Usage

A GEDCOM file is simply a text file, with special formatting, which allows genealogists to share their family trees with each other quickly and easily. The word GEDCOM stands for Genealogical Data Communication. This standard format can easily let files be shared between different programs and individuals.

Most genealogists in the 21st century use the internet as part of their research. Because a GEDCOM file can pretty much be used by anyone, a website looking to share information will normally request a GEDCOM file version of your information. This is true at GenCircles, WorldConnect, and just about any other genealogy website.

When you choose to export your family tree to a GEDCOM file, remember to filter what you are exporting. There are times that you'll wish to only export a given line of a family tree, and there are times that you'll want to exclude living members of your family for privacy reasons. These options should always be available in your software - read the manual for more details on exactly how to achieve these goals.
