The Genealogy of the Mayflower

The Mayflower and the Puritans are the focus of attention in the US in November. Genealogy on these groups has probably been done more thoroughly than just about any other group of people, so if you are actually a descendant of these original settlers, it's most likely you know about it already.

Still, it's always possible that you are a 'lost' member of this family tree. The first place to start is the On Line Mayflower Genealogy. This website lists all 102 passengers on the Mayflower trip in 1620, including three pregnant women. Check the genealogies listed to see if one of them connects up with your own.

While you're on the site, be sure to read up on the common myths of the Mayflower and Pilgrims. For one, most of the people on the Mayflower weren't pilgrims - they were separatists. Separatists weren't as "extreme" as the pilgrims were, although they did want to get further away from the church. The early settlers did wear colors other than black and white, although those were easiest for them to keep clean and to create. Also, the buckles seen on just about every thanksgiving decoration didn't come into use until the 1800s!
