U.S. Vital Records for GenealogyEvery state in the US keeps vital records for legal reasons of every person that is born, married or dies in that state. Depending on the state, you can usually get access to that information for a fee. If you know for example that your grandfather was born in Springfield, Illinois, you can usually write to get a copy of his birth certificate. This would then tell you the names and birthplaces of his parents, which lets you now move back a previous generation in your family tree construction. Here are the links to the state organizations that manage the vital records for that state. Don't forget to write the town hall, too! Often the town hall for the town of birth / marriage / death has even more complete records than the state does. Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware District of Columbia Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming
