Flat Screen LCD TV Information and HelpIn the Old Days, TVs all had rounded fronts and very deep backs. That's because a TV was in essence a mini-projector. There was a full projector set in the back of your TV set pointed at the front glass, showing the image in reverse. Yes, technology progressed so that projector got smaller and smaller, but there always had to be some amount of size involved to have that image created. Along came a change in technology. LCD technology did NOT involve a projector - instead it involved "liquid crystals" which are the LC part of LCD. This is what laptops use for their super-thin monitors. The exact same technology was brought into the TV world. You can have LCDs at both regular resolution (480 lines) and high definition (1080 lines) quality. A LCD TV is super thin, which many people find to be wonderful. The downsides of an LCD display have been known to laptop users for years, though. I'm typing this on a laptop right now. The display is lovely - but doesn't do wonderfully with really dark blacks. It isn't necessarily great from angles, so you have to be sitting straight-on to the image to see the best quality. On the up side, it's pretty much impossible to "burn in" an image on a LCD. Burn in is like when you go to a bank ATM and can see ghostly images of the welcome screen all the time because those areas of the screen have been lit for too long and now are "always lit". This is really awful on a computer screen of course because you're likely to have a standard menu bar up quite a bit, and on a "normal" monitor this would burn in after a while. A LCD display doesn't ever have this problem. While it's not quite as much of an issue with a TV display since you don't watch the same image all the time on TV, if you did watch say ESPN 24 hours a day and the logo was always in the exact same spot - or if you played video games that had stationary items like health bars in the same spot, you could see how this could become a problem. LCD completely does not have burn-in and would be great in these situations. Yes, LCD technology is really improving. I have a Sony VAIO laptop and the LCD display is GREAT - super sharp, super crisp. So you can find that quality of display if you are willing to pay the premium to get it.
