High Definition TV Information and HelpThe very first TVs to come out had 480 lines of information on them. If you stare closely at one of those "standard" TVs you can actually see the little lines. That meant that the picture quality was relatively grainy, because the best you could do was to have 480 lines worth of image. After many, many decades of this "low resolution" 480 line image, where you could see the grainy lines of the image, people cried out for a higher quality image. Thus came the high definition TV. When you went to a high definition TV, on the exact same size of TV, the high definition TV would cram 1080 lines worth of image, instead of only 480. Since this meant you had over twice the lines for the same size image, the quality was of course much higher. In addition to having far more lines, a high definition signal is also wider. Standard TVs only had a 4:3 signal, that is almost square. We all grew up with these TVs and can visualize them. In comparison, the high definitions signal provided a signal that was much wider. With this wider aspect, modern movies could be shown without the edges cut off.
