Editing HPR Files in Roxio DVD Creator

Roxio DVD Creator is a cheap program that lets you create DVDs from home videos and Super-8 movies. However, if you ever move files around on your hard drive, you have to tinker to keep your movies functional.

For every DVD project you make, a HPR file is saved. This file is stored in

Documents and Settings
(your name)
My Documents
Roxio
PM Studio

So if you made a project named MyFamily, you would find a file called MyFamily.hpr in this subdirectory. If for some reason you managed to install the HPR files in another area, do a search on your hard drive to figure out where it was placed.

The issue with the HPR files is that they do not handle file movements very well. Let's say you put all your original video files into c:\movies. Let's then say you decide to move them into e:\movies. There is NO way to tell DVD Creator to find them in the new location. You literally have to recreate the project from scratch to use them in this new location.

Luckily, all of the file information is stored in the HPR file. WARNING - this file is not straight text. There are special codes in it. So you must be VERY careful to change only the exact letter or letters you need to and save it out as ANSI again. It is best to edit the file with notepad (the default windows text editor) so that you don't accidentially add any extra characters into it.

Go into

notepad

and open the file. Ignore the strange characters and instead look for the file names. I've found the safest way to change the file is to change ONE occurrence of the file location. Save the HPR file under a new name. Open this new project in DVD Creator. Make sure it took that change well. Close down the project in DVD Creator. Open up the new HRP file in notepad and make a second change. Save it under a new name and so on.

Every once in a while a change will NOT take for some strange reason. Just go back to the previous HPR file and make the change again. Usually it will then take fine. Yes, this is a tedious process. But in the end it might take you an hour to handle a file move in this manner. Having to go back and re-edit and re-cut your entire movie project could easily take you days.

Good luck!
