Separating MP3 Tracks from MPG Movies

As you start to work more with old Super 8 and VHS movies, strange things start to happen. Sometimes the audio track gets out of sync with the video. How do you fix this?

What you need to do is first to get this Super 8 or VHS turned into a MPG. I have instructions on how to do that on my site, or you can send out your reels and VHS tapes to have it done for you. Once you have the MPG file, you need to separate the audio from the video.

Download this tool - DVD2AVI. This great utility is free and lets you do operations on the video track vs the audio track. In this case what you want to do is first open your MPG file. Then go into Audio - Track - 1 to select track #1 (the audio track) as the one you want to be working with. Finally do File - Save Project. It will save out both a main project file and also either a WAV or MPA music file. If you get a MPA just rename it to MP2 which WinAmp or just about any other music program will be able to read.

Now head into your DVD creation tool, and tell it that you want to add an audio track to your DVD. Give it this audio track you just stripped off - and adjust its starting location to match up with the mouth movements. You'll find it should be pretty easy to fix the sync problems now that the audio and video are separate!
