Jonathan Oxendine Lumbee American Indians

Out of all of our Oxendine roots, the BEST documented by far is Jonathan Oxendine. Jonathan was born in 1807 in Tennessee. is the son of Omi Oxendine and Bill Williams, and the half-brother of Wilson Oxendine. Records say that Omi was with "a white man", apparently Bill Williams, and had Jonathan. About Bill Williams - "He was a white man and recognized as such."

When Jonathan was 4 (so say the Chancery records tho it appears Jonathan was more like 3), Omi took up with "Old" David Oxendine and had Polly, Wilson, and Mandy. David Oxendine was very dark and looked to be part negro. Oma and Oxendine "lived in the flat woods on the waters of Blackburns Fork". David Oxendine was born sometime before 1775.

Jonathan marries Sally in 1839 or so, and has these kids:

1810 Information
"The 1810 census schedules for Tennessee no longer exist as they were burned by the British during the War of 1812." So much for tracking backwards!! Note that the 1800 and 1790 records also were toasted.

1820 Jackson Cty Tennessee Census
David Oxendine is the household leader here. That first "2" is in the "foreigners not naturalized" column. Note that this is a 'descriptor' column that just says how many out of the census were foreigners - just like 'how many can't read' and so on. So it appears to be that David and Omi were listed in this column, but then were also listed in their appropriate age-counting columns. Next come the "free colored" entries. Two are "males under 14". In 1820, these would be Jonathan (13) and Wilson (10) Oxendine. Then we have a Male 45+, who is David Oxendine. then a female under 14 (Polly Oxendine, age 11). Finally we have a female 26-45 who is Omi Oxendine.

1830 White Cty Tennessee Census
By 1830, "Omy" Oxendyne is all alone in a household ("aged 30-40") with one daughter ("aged 10-15"). This would appear to be young Mandy who is barely 10 here. Note that I removed the names above her for this image. At this point Jonathan is 23, Polly is 21 and Wilson is 20. All are probably off working elsewhere. There are no other Oxendines as household names in White County for 1830.

March 4 1837 is supposedly when Jonathan Oxendine forced young Nancy to marry him. Jonathan was 30 at the time, Nancy was 12. The Chancery Court Records were sent to my dad by Lisa Williams, in which Jonathan is accused of dragging off the then 12 year old Nancy Martin Vandandts and forcing her to marry him. Nancy didn't stay with Jonathan and later married Thomas Price. The court case is because when Thomas died, the other relatives tried to keep the inheritance from Nancy, claiming that since she had been already married to Jonathan, she couldn't legally have been married to Thomas and therefore didn't deserve any of his money (even though she had 2 kids with Thomas after their wedding).

So this Jonathan and his exploits are very well documented.

1840 White Cty Tennessee Census

Jonathan Oxendine should be 33 now; he's living next door to his mom. On the census, Jonathan is now between 20-30, has a wife that is 15-20 (we assume this to be Sally, aged 15) and a male child that is under 5 (John, barely born). Jonathan in agriculture and can't read. So were are only 3 years from his marrying Nancy aged 12, and he has now married Sally aged 15.

1850 White Cty Tennessee Census
Jonathan Oxendine, aged 43, still runs his own household and Naomi is now missing.

Jonathan is now 43, his wife Sally is 25. They have 3 kids:
John (10)
Polly (8) named after the aunt?
Amanda (3)

1860 White Cty Tennessee Census
District 8, page 119
Jonathan Oxendine, now 52, still runs his own household and Naomi is still missing. He's farm labor, can't read or write. His estate is worth $25.

His wife is missing. He has "Sarah" living with him, aged 80. He also has:

Amanda (11)
Elizabeth (8)
James (6)
Melissa (4)
JK (5 months)

If Jonathan's wife died, she did so recently. Maybe in childbirth ...

1870 White Cty Tennessee Census

Note that there are only TWO Oxendine families left in Tennessee in 1870. Elizabeth and her daughter are one. Jonathan and his family is the second.

Jonathan Oxendine is now 64 and has remarried Sallie, age 38. She can't be the same woman from before despite the same name. Jonathan seems to like his women young, though. They have:
Amanda (20)
Nat (16, maybe James?)
Sis (16) i.e Melissa
Peter (10, probably JK)
Perry (7)

All are listed as "W" for white. John would now be 28 and is not found in Tennessee. Juliana is now 24 and probably married. Amanda's still here - so where is 18 year old Elizabeth Oxendine? Is she married already? She's not found as a single woman in any other household ... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm ....

1880 White Cty Tennessee Census
Jonathan Oxendine appears to be dead now.

We have his widow, Sallie, claiming to be 45 (not 48). The kids are:
Amanda (28), day laborer
Peter (18) farmer
Rachel (16), laborer (is this Perry?)

Also, next door is Melissa / Sis, 22. Melissa is unmarried apparently but has a 1 year old daughter, Ada Oxendine.

Letter from Mary Horace Hudgens, Sparta TN, "March 15" -
"I did find some names like Oxendine, just the names, no way to connect them to anything else, and I had never heard that name except by the uncle who raised me, he called me Sis Oxendine for a woman who he said could ask more questions than anyone he had ever seen and I remember he said her brother Pete had a wooden leg, never could decide why that had anything to do with them being brother and sister. ... I thought my grandmother was cruel when she named my daddy Cicero Ferguson Bonner ..."
