Mrs. Clay
Persuasion
In the book, it's clear that Mrs. Clay is not attractive and not thought at all by the father as a replacement for his wife. The scheming of Mr. Elliot is all for naught and is silly. In the movies, she is made VERY attractive and seems very much to be a threat.
The 2008 Masterpiece Theater version is below. I actually think she is the prettiest woman in the movie in this one.
In the 1995 version it was probably the best - not high class, but a reasonable companion for Elizabeth. This is Anne, Mrs. Clay, Elizabeth and Mr. Elliot.
In the 1971 version she is a little too stodgy but at least more of a "lower class but nice enough woman". She's the one in the long white dress.
