Mr. Wickham is a very friendly sort, good looking, and everybody likes him immediately. He spends all his time talking about his misfortunes. You get a great sense in the A&E version (since they have lots of time available to tell the tale properly) of just how talented Mr. Wickham is at weaving his falsehoods in with believable stories. Even in the end, many people fall for his pity-me stories.
