Japanese Movie Listing

I have loved the Japanese culture and Feudal Japan in particular since I was young. I have watched many Japanese movies over the years, and have put my own notes along with the notes of friends and family. Over the this list has grown and grown, thanks to the input of many web visitors!

Note that since each of these movies was seen by a normal human being, what you read here is just one person's opinion :) Your own opinion may of course be different! If you notice that a movie listing is missing or incorrect, please Contact Me (Really!! WRITE ME!!!) so I can update the list!

Check out Japanese Movies By Director if you want to see what movies a given director made. Otherwise, use this alphabetical listing to view your movie by title.

Osaka Elegy (1936) 71 m. (Naniwa hika / Naniwa ereji)
Osaka Elegy ranks with Sisters of Gion (also released in 1936) as one of Mizoguchi's greatest prewar films, and marked the director's first collaboration with screenwriter Yoshikata Yoda, who would pen most of Mizoguchi's subsequent works. Isuzu Yamada (Sisters of Gion, Kurosawa's Throne of Blood) gives a career performance as Ayako, a telephone operator who enters into an adulterous relationship with her well-off boss in order to help out her debt-ridden family. The illicit affair earns her family the wrath of the boss's wife, and Ayako soon finds herself abandoned by her young fiancé and on a dizzying downward spiral into ruination. Osaka Elegy's final scene -- a direct stare into the camera by actress Yamada -- startled audiences in 1936; the film was banned in Japan in 1940 for "decadent tendencies." Director: Kenji Mizoguchi. Cast: Isuzu Yamada, Eitaro Shindo, Kensaku Hara, Benkei Shiganoya. B&W, In Japanese with English subtitles. [Daniel Richard]

The Outcast (1962) 118m
