Spiral Origami Mobile

The spiral origami mobile is by far the most difficult design I offer. Just over 3 feet tall from the bottom crane to the top dowel, the mobile has a spiralling cascade of cranes. Each one is beaded with your choice of gemstone. In the photos below, you see white cranes with traditional Chinese jade gemstones.

The balance is so sensitive on this mobile that it took me over six hours to get the cranes and arms to balance just right! The end result is well worth it, though. This mobile offers by far the most elegant and relaxing experience.

A counterweight at the bottom is made up of six Chinese jade gemstones as well as a hummingbird figurine.

I posed in two of these photos to give you a sense of the scale.

The cranes hang from golden threads, while the mobile arms are separated by very thin beading wire. This means that you can change the direction of the spiral, as well as the distance between the arms. You can go for a gentle spiral, as shown here, or you can space the cranes out further to have the effect of "eight points of the compass".

The cranes are spaced vertically so that each arm is just below the previous crane. This means you could even have all the cranes "line up" in a vertical plane, if you wanted to hang this against a wall as a wall sculpture.

The cranes rest freely on top of their gemstone bead. You can therefore turn the cranes to face in whichever direction you wish. Normally they face in the direction of the spiral, but you could have them spiral backwards or sideways if you enjoy that look.
