All I Have to Do is Dream - Everly Brothers

One of the most well known songs about dreaming was written by the Everly Brothers. With lyrics like dreeeeeam, dream dream dream, the focus of the song is pretty clear! The song hit the top of the charts back in 1958.

The Everly Brothers were born to a pair of well known country/folk musicians and took to the music business immediately. They were recording almost immediately and became a crossover sensation. They had a fantastic career until a very public breakup in 1973.

But back to the dream. This dreamy song has pretty straightforward, harmony-laden lyrics such as:

"When I want you in my arms
When I want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dreeeeeeeeam"

The person in the dream has a crush on someone else that they can't have in real life, either through shyness or other reasons. So the person, instead of fixing the real life problem, spends all their time dreaming instead. The singer knows this is a problem - they sing:

"Only trouble is, gee whiz
I'm dreamin' my life away"

They're wasting their time on dreams instead of taking action!

The song was later covered by Roy Orbison and REM, showing just how popular and timeless the theme is.

While dreams are great to tell you WHAT to focus on in real life, they should never become a substitute! Listen to your dreams, find a direction, and then take action!
