Losing a pet in real life can be an incredibly traumatic experience. You have let down a creature that depended on you for its very life. What does this mean when it happens in a dream?
A pet is a sign of responsibility and love. Your pet gives you unconditional love, depending on you for affection, food, water and shelter. In return you have the responsibility to take care of it and keep it safe. If you lose your pet, it means you have let it down in some way, failed at your responsibility and lost that love.
So losing a pet is a sign that you are worried about the responsibilities in your life, and the love you have. Maybe you realize you aren't doing enough to maintain the relationship you're in and keep it healthy. Maybe you worry that your partner senses that and is preparing to "run off". The dream is a sign that you should really pay attention to those who you love, and make sure that you are working actively to meet their needs.
