The cat is the most common household pet in the world. Dreaming about cats is therefore extremely common. What does it usually mean?
First, if you HAVE a cat, that is always the first place to start. How is your relationship with your cat? Warm and cozy? Sort of standoffish? Is your cat a lap-snuggler, or a scared hide-under-the-porch variety? The dream is using your cat's personality to try to say something about your life.
If you don't have a cat, or if the cat in your dream was very unlike your own, personal cat, then it may be a more general symbol. In history, the cat is often associated with female intelligence and cunning, and more specifically, with female witches.
A cat in a dream may indicate that you should pay attention to how you are thinking about a situation, and trust in yourself to handle it properly. The way in which you treat the cat might reflect on how you are currently handling this situation.
If you are male, it might be that the cat represents a female in your life, with her independence and wisdom. How does the cat react to you? Is it angry with you? Is it shy, but friendly? This might give you a sense about the situation and how to proceed.
