Stade - Medieval City

Stade is a well preserved town located north on the Elbe river from Hamburg. It was once controlled by the Swedish and offers gorgeous baroque mansions.

Stade was founded in the early 900s and once was a thriving commercial port. Hamburg became larger, though, and Stade slowly lost power. Stade has worked hard to retain the medieval and baroque flavor of their city layout and many enjoy coming here to imagine what old-time Germany would have been like.

There is a Rathaus from 1667 that shows the influence of the Swedish, Dutch and German architecture.
