Pregnancy - Pregnancy and Sushi

Some doctors recommend even sushi be avoided during pregnancy. Why is that?

Sushi is raw fish, and because of that, there is a slight chance of someone developing parasites, such as the tapeworm. This of course happens extremely rarely, but it is possible. If a pregnant woman developed a tapeworm and did not realize it, she could then have fewer nutrients in her system to pass along to the growing infant.

The chance of getting tapeworms from sushi is very slim, so it is up to the pregnant mother to weigh the chances of this vs her enjoyment of sushi. A comparison might be that the mother could put off getting her hair cut every month, because the risk of getting hurt in an automobile accident going to and from the hair salon exists.
