June 8 in PublishingOn June 8, 1949, George Orwell first published his famous novel 1984. The cover of the book had the title both in numerals, 1984, as well as spelled out as nineteen eighty-four. The book was looking forward decades into the future and predicting a totalitarian state where the government watched everything we did and even tried to control what we thought.
The book influenced a variety of books and movies over the years, and many of its terms like "Big Brother" are considered normal terms nowadays!
Have you read 1984? What did you think of it? Is it still relevant now that we've moved past that date?
Note that June 8, 1947 was the birthdate of novelist Sara Paretsky!
