Regency Period and Jane AustenI adore Jane Austen. Her writings are set in the period between 1790 and 1830 - i.e. during the years that she lived. She wrote about life as she knew it. This period of English history is known as the Regency period. It is known as this because at the time King George III was not doing well, so his son George IV became his "regent" - i.e. ran the kingdom for the king. While the actual official regency was from 1811 to 1820, the name now covers a wider range, from about 1790 to 1837. So this very neatly overlaps the Jane Austen period.
