LISA & BOB:
Houston Texas - July 1996

July 3rd
We tried to leave the 3rd, but the plane had all sorts of trouble. The airlines tried to get us to drive all the way home, then all the way back in again for some really early flight the next morning. We'd barely get 3 hours of sleep at home. Bob talked the airlines into putting us up for the night in Boston.

From our hotel, we went down to the HarbourFest celebration on the Boston waterfront. They had a live band which was great, plus beer and food. We even got to see the fireworks! It ended up being a great time.

July 4th
We finally got to depart from Boston the morning of the 4th. We landed in Houston in the early afternoon. We drove straight to Galveston which is where my grandparents lived. They had a one-level house there with a small back yard, in amongst a golf course. In their wood-fence-lined back yard they had a fascinating hose-based irrigation system set up for their flowers. They had many photos of our relatives and ancestors that were fascinating to look through.

We had dinner with the couple at the golf club they belonged to. Soon it was time to head out.

On our way back up to Houston, we stopped in at a nearby drive-through animal farm.

The farm was rather exciting! The horned animals all wanted to come butt against the rental car. I don't think they did much damage. The emus had their heads exactly at our eye level, and with those beady little eyes they looked like velociraptors, ready to poke our eyes out. I took photos fast before rolling up the windows with them about! It was a bit unnerving to be eye-to-eye with them, knowing they could easily go for the eyes :)

Eventually we headed back to the Mensa Annual Gathering, which was taking place in Houston that year. We stopped in at some western shops to get authentic Cowboy Hats for the dance. At the AG, we got to see John Adams and a ton of our friends. Dinner was cowboy themed, and we were dressed appropriately! Finally when night fell, we all went up into the rotating restaurant for the fireworks. Amusingly, the fireworks ended up being shot in a location where our view of them was blocked by a building. We had to watch their reflections!

Still, it was a long, amazing evening :)
