Tue May 4 - Florida Wild Bird Center
Key Largo, Key West, Everglades Travelogue

Tuesday was our first full day with all 3 of us in the Keys. This was our day to explore the lower everglades. I took over 150 photos today so only a small selection made it onto this site. Let me note on a down note for the Westin that our one tiny trash can was already full at this point and was never emptied, and that they did not have the checkout time listed ANYWHERE in their material or on the door. For those finding this page in order to learn what it is, it's 12 noon.

Anyway, the birds chirping outside our window were quite wonderful!

We showered and thought about the all you can eat buffet at the Cafe Largo but since we don't eat much figured it would be a big waste of money. We were going in one car today since there was no need to take the motorcycle out to the everglades. So for breakfast we all went to the local Waffle House where they make *incredibly* fluffy omelets and delicious breakfast foods. We were quite pleased, it was quick, clean and friendly. And inexpensive to boot! I had the eggs and cheese with sausages and raisin-toast. Yummmm!

We then stopped at Shell World - a huge tourist shop - to get Jenn a hat. We ended up getting two tshirts (me) and a hat and cool key chain (Jenn). The lady at the counter looked at us and said "You two are sisters?" and we said yup! She said "Wow, one of you has curly hair and one has straight hair!" We weren't quite sure what to answer to that :)

On to the Wild Bird Center (Wild Bird Center Website). We LOVE this place and highly recommend it to any birders. They rescue and care for birds that are injured in the area. Not only that, but TONS of wild birds come visit them and hang out - so you can get VERY close to ibis, egrets, pelicans, and much more. Despite being May and "mosquito season" we had gorgeous weather and no bugs at all, since the rains hadn't started yet.

There were hurt hawks and owls in cages for you to admire. A special treat today was an egret walking calmly down the boardwalk in front of us.
