Parakeets Ornithosis - Psittacosis

Ornithosis is the name of an avian disease that parakeets can pass along to humans. The main symptoms are seen in the parakeet's eyes - they will have tears flowing from their eyes and will blink a lot to try to clear them. In humans, the symptoms are like a serious flu or pneumonia - headache, fever, chills, etc.

This disease is also called psittacosis, "parrot fever" or "parrot disease".

If you suspect your keet has ornithosis, SEE YOUR VET. Only your vet can handle this problem and diagnose it properly.

NOTE: I AM NOT A VET! If you have ANY concern about your parakeet's health and safety, no 'far off person' on the web will be able to accurately diagnose the issue. You need to bring your keet to a real, live vet to see the symptoms first hand and take appropriate action. It is normally treated with antibiotics.
