When a Keet Passes Away

It's always a sad thing when a parakeet passes away. A keet can live for up to 20 years, so for a young adult the keet may literally have been a member of the household for their entire lifetime. Not only is it hard on the human beings in the house, but it's also hard on any remaining keets in the cage.

A period of mourning is natural, of course, as when any living creature passes away. If it helps, make a memorial to the keet - put out photos of the keet, put up a website with pictures. Share stories. Talk on our forum to let us know what a wonderful keet it was.

Keep in mind that life and death are very natural things, and they happen. Your keet was at one point born from a little egg, springing into life. She lived her life and reached the end, and had to pass away again. It is the cycle of things. When you are ready, consider getting another keet, to share all of the knowledge and wisdom and love you have learned about keets with a new, fluffy little friend. You undoubtedly have at this point a nice cage, food, and the experience necessary to take great care of a little parakeet. There is probably the perfect keet waiting for you at your local pet store or breeder's home that would be a perfect companion for you.

For some people, they are ready to get the new keet in a few days. Others take a few weeks before you are ready. Don't rush it - but don't necessarily spend months and months mourning the lost keet. The keet will live on in your memory, and the time she spent with you is now valuable in that you can be an even better owner to the new keet in your life!

If you are going to introduce a new keet into an existing flock of birds, make sure you read my pages on Adding a second bird. Also, if your bird died an unusual death, such as poisoning, make sure you take care of any environmental issues (i.e. removing all teflon pans from the house, etc) before getting the new bird.
