Pesticides and Parakeet - Budgie - Keets

Your home has some sort of a pest problem - maybe it's carpenter ants, maybe it's termites. You are considering having an exterminator come and blast the house with poison. The VERY FIRST THING you need to do is get your keet to safety LONG before this happens - and to keep your keet far, far away until the house is completely clean again.

Every single poison I have seen or researched has warnings on it to keep it away from ALL pets and small children. Think about this - if a small child can be affected, and a keet is only 1/20th of even a newborn's size, then the danger to a parakeet is astronomical. A keet can be affected by *incense* - never mind by a chemical specifically formulated to slay living creatures.

Poison doesn't just vanish after it's bombarded in a house, either. Even if you open all the doors and windows, remnants of that poison is going to cling to carpets, curtains, ceilings, you name it. A serious cleaning needs to be done before the house is safe for anybody to be in it. A tiny parakeet, with a tiny parakeet body stands little chance against poison. Remember the canaries in the coal mines? The canaries were brought in because they would keel over dead with only minute amounts of poison in the air. The canary's death would warn the miners to retreat. Not very nice for the canaries!

Parakeets have evolved to hide ALL symptoms of illness. Sick birds were the ones that predators would eat. So it's critical that you as the owner take all of the precautions. Just because the bird does not LOOK sick, does not mean the keet is not actually sick. Pesticides can cause nasty cancers and sicknesses. You might not know for another 5 years that a tumor is now growing inside your keet's body, making every single day miserable for your little bird.

Take this seriously. Pesticides are deadly. They should be avoided WHENEVER possible. We are only now learning how dangerous pesticides are for human beings. If you won't research this for your keet's health - research it for your OWN health. You only have one life to live on this planet, and if you damage your body, you won't get a new one.
