Rectal Prolapse
Innards Protruding from the Parakeet's Rear End

Parakeets have a digestive system much like a human's. Food goes into the parakeet's mouth. It goes down to her stomach. It is digested in the stomach, and then sent through the intestines. Whatever is left then comes out the parakeet's rear end in a poop.

A parakeet's intestines can become weakened for two main reasons. First, the keet's intestines can become weak because she doesn't get enough nutrients (i.e. is on a seed-only diet). Second, the keet can become infested with parasites who in essence suck away the nutrients before the bird can use them. Either way, the intestines no longer hold in place well and in essence 'slide out' the end hole, bulging there. It can look like a red marble stuck out the rear end of the parakeet.

This is of course not healthy for the bird! You need to bring the parakeet to a vet right away. The vet will gently get the innards back into the bird where they belong, and then stitch the hole mostly closed so that the innards don't fit out any more. Also, of course, the instestines need to be strenghtened so they don't have this problem in the future - by a proper diet and by removal of parasites (if there were some).

NOTE: I AM NOT A VET! If you have ANY concern about your parakeet's health and safety, no 'far off person' on the web will be able to accurately diagnose the issue. You need to bring your keet to a real, live vet to see the symptoms first hand and take appropriate action.
