My Keets Won't Leave their Cage

User Question
hi i have a question about my parakeets. i often leave the door open for

them to freely come out and explore but they never leave the cage. they

will comfortably sit on perches and play with toys neer the open door, but

they never come out. even when i take them out on my finger they will only

stay out for a brief period of time then flutter to thier cage and climb

back in. how can i encourage them to come out the front door?

Lisa's Answer
First, always make sure your keets are fully hand trained before you let them out. You want to be sure you can reliably get them back into the cage in case of emergency.

That being said, you have to think a parakeet. Why would she want to leave her safe cage? Where is she going to go? Parakeets won't necessarily just fly around to "nowhere". Make sure you've got a keet-safe playgym to bring them to, that they enjoy. Put toys and millet on it. If your keet has nowhere to go to, there's no reason for them to leave their cage door.
