My Parakeet's Leg is Bleeding

User Question
Well i've had 2 parakeets for quiet a while. They had owners before me but their still young. The problem is that the girl bird's leg is bleeding i think she picks at it or something. I don't know how her leg is bleeding because theirs no sharp objects in the cage or anything. My question is What can i do about it? Im very worried about her!!

Lisa's Answer
Yikes, the answer is not to email a far off website, but to pick up the phone and call your local vet, so you can get your parakeet in to see a doctor! Injured pets need to be taken to a doctor quickly. While you're trying to reach your vet, you should get the parakeet into her travel cage and try to dab at the wound with a styptic pencil - the same pencil that people who shave use on the cuts that shaving often causes.

I'm not sure how the bleeding began of course - maybe she cut herself on a rough edge of the cage, maybe she or the other keet nipped at her leg and cut it open. But parakeets have very low blood volume in their tiny bodies. They really can't afford to lose any blood.
