My Parakeet Keeps Escaping from his Cage

User Question
Over Spring break while visiting family we found a parakeet in the yard that we were able to catch because he was really weak from flying and was starving. so now i have a pet parakeet that is constantly getting out of the cage and flying around my room. He is really scared of me but i have to keep him locked in my room since i have cats and dogs and he gets out of the cage. I dont mind letting in out of the cage but he is so scared of me i am afraid he will get away and get injured. any ideas.

How is your parakeet getting out of his cage? You *really* shouldn't let your parakeet out if it is not finger trained. What if there was some sort of emergency and you had to get the parakeet back into the cage because there was a fire, or the cats got into the room? If your parakeet is untamed, and flying wildly around the room, it could literally be a life or death situation.

Parakeet cages all have little doors so you can change the food and water without letting the bird out. You really need to focus on never letting the parakeet out for now.

Every day, work on hand training the parakeet. I have a ton of pages on the site about how to hand train a bird. If you are intending to let the parakeet out in the future, you need to work on the hand training now, so that eventually it will be safe for the parakeet to be out in your room.
