We Found a Lost Parakeet - It's Lonely

User Question
Just a few days ago we found a lonely parakeet in a parking lot. We bent down and it came to us! It was starving so we gave it food, and now it's living with us. It has a new cage, food, water.. everything it says birds need. He is not a young bird. Before the bird was coming out of the cage and we let it fly around the room, but now it won't. I can hear it rumbling around in its cage at night, and I think he's depressed. He has plenty of treats and a toy, andwe're constantly playing music to him. We don't know what else to do to make this poor little bird happy again. Thank you very much!

Lisa's Answer
Actually if he's happy staying in his cage that is a GOOD sign. It means he thinks of this as his home and wants to stay there. Also I really would never let a parakeet out of a cage unless it is fully hand trained. If there was some sort of an emergency you always need to be able to get your parakeet back into its cage in a hurry without any difficulty. Maybe the keet was hand trained? That is something to keep in mind though.

If you're always playing with him and playing music for him, I really think the parakeet has got to be rather happy. That is what parakeets dream about. The only other thing I could recommend is getting him another parakeet to play with. It could be that your parakeet came from a home that had a bunch of parakeets in a cage and it's hard for him to adapt to being the only parakeet around. Parakeets are flock animals, and really like having other parakeets there to hang out with.
